How can I avoid being stopped by the police?

Sometimes police officers will stop a motor vehicle because they saw the driver or a passenger commit an infraction.  Other times police officers will stop a motor vehicle because, even though they haven’t observed a specific violation, the manner in which the vehicle is being driven makes the officer think something just isn’t quite right.  Unfortunately, there is simply no way to guarantee that you will not be stopped by the police. However, here are four simple things you can do to reduce the likelihood of being pulled over by the police.

1.  Obey the law.  People laugh at me when I say this, because it is so obvious.  The majority of traffic stops occur because a police officer observed the motorist doing something the officer believes is illegal, such as exceeding the speed limit, turning or changing lanes without signaling, failing to stop at a stop sign or a red light, following another vehicle too closely, etc.  If you obey the traffic laws you will be less likely to be stopped by a police officer.

2.  Check the vehicle.  In addition to committing a traffic violation, one easy way to get stopped by the police is to have an equipment violation or to not know where a knob, lever or button is when you need it.  Make sure the inspection, city/county sticker and plates are current.  Check the head lights, tail lights, brake lights and turn signals to make sure they are functioning properly.  Familiarize yourself with the vehicle so you don’t accidentally squeal the tires because you’re unfamiliar with the clutch or activate the windshield wipers instead of the turn signal as you approach an intersection where an officer is sitting.  It only takes a minute or two, and it will be a minute or two well spent.  If you make sure the vehicle is in working order, and you know how to operate it, you will be less likely to be stopped by the police.

3. Have a plan.  If you decide on a plan before you begin driving, you will be less likely to make erratic movements with the vehicle which are brought on by indecision.  You should know where you are going, how to get there, how to get back, the route you are going to take, and any stops you are going to make along way.  Inevitably, when you decide to make that unexpected turn at the last second you will do so in a way which draws the attention of the officer you didn’t see.  If you have a plan and stick to it, you will be less likely to be pulled over by a police officer.

4.  Avoid distractions.  We all love to multi-task.  However, when we multi-task we are not focused on how we are driving and we are more likely to drift back and forth, cross the lane markings, swerve or brake abruptly to avoid a collision, inadvertently exceed the speed limit, almost miss our turn, etc.  When we divide our attention between driving and other tasks, we are more likely to be stopped by the police.  Avoid eating, drinking, changing the CD, talking on the phone, sending text messages, putting on makeup, searching for a cigarette, reaching under the seat for that lighter, etc. and you will be less likely to be pulled over by the police.

It seems obvious, but I can’t tell you how many of my clients are stopped by police for the things listed above.  If you just obey the law, have a plan and avoid distractions when you are driving, you will be far less likely to be pulled over by a police officer.
